Portfolios are an educational tool, used for a variety of purposes.  Portfolios can be used to:

  • review and practice

  • collect level appropriate materials for reference and study

  • show growth and change over time

  • show a process by which work is done

  • create collections of personally important work

  • prepare a sample of best work for employment or college admission and placement

  • communicate with student’s subsequent teacher

  • communicate with student’s parent

In a Foreign Language Class portfolios are often used to collect:

  • vocabulary for a specific topic

  • grammar

  • verb conjugation patterns

  • dialogues

  • sentences

Why should I keep it organized?

The materials that are placed in the Foreign Language portfolio contain material to help you to improve your ability to communicate in both oral and written form.  Your accuracy, thoughtfulness and organization of your portfolio communicates to others the value that you place on the process of second language learning.  Correction of errors is a technique to enable you to learn accurate use of grammar and vocabulary.  Correcting your errors also exhibits your dedication and desire to improve your skills.  Ask yourself if you would be proud to share your practice folder with next year’s teacher, a parent, an administrator, a university professor, or an employer?

Selection of materials:

Some work like verb reference sheets and vocabulary must be corrected before it will be accepted in the portfolio.

Each 6 weeks there will be class time to choose 2 - 3 selections and your teacher will help the class to review which activities were done during that time period.

A portfolio is a collection of specially chosen written, visual and spoken work.  The portfolio collection supports and provides evidence that you are acquiring language skills as determined at local and state levels.   Some work will be required by the teacher; some work will be decided by you.  The portfolio is the result of your efforts.

One each six weeks now needs to be a “best work” piece or “work that leads to improvement of a skill”. At the end of semester, you also must have a variety of materials created with references and without references.
